Evacuate Susanville Correctional Center Inmates for their safety due to Dixie Fire!
The Issue
The Dixie Fires have been burning for 37 days with still no end in sight. They have made their way far up north to the outskirts of a town called Susanville, which consists of two prisons, High Desert State Prison (HDSP) & California Correctional Center (CCC). These two prisons combined house approximately 7,715 incarcerated individuals who have been dealing with the effects of toxic air quality (no longer on the index) from all of the smoke. Residents at these facilities state that there has been thick smoke trapped inside the facilities all throughout their cells, making it difficult to breath. Individuals are resorting to sticking their heads in toilets in an attempt to get some type of fresh air. The phone lines have been in & out for weeks now, so it has become a challenge for our loved ones to get in contact with their families on the outside. CCC has been short-staffed because some employees have began evacuating their families, so they are running little to no program for inmates. Seeing how close the fire is to town, residents of Susanville have prepared to evacuate. Although these two prisons are a few miles out of town, it has been stated that they are still located dangerously close to the fire line. On Tuesday, August 17, CDCR spokeswoman Dana Simas stated there are still no plans to evacuate. The only statement that has been given is that there is a long standing response plan. What exactly are these plans? Families have not been getting answers & it is extremely frustrating as well as frightening. We are concerned for the well-being of our loved ones whose health & safety has noticeably been pushed aside. Action needs to be taken to ensure more serious health issues don’t arise due to lack of efforts by CDCR to keep our loved ones safe.
