Anthony Vasquez is Innocent. Don’t let him rot in prison.
The Issue
Anthony Vasquez was a minor when he was falsely accused and wrongfully convicted of murder and attempted murder. He is serving a 29 to life sentence and has been incarcerated for 26 years. I need your help to have him released.
While the criminal activity was taking place, Anthony Vasquez was at an all-night (7pm – 7am) skating event at the World on Wheels roller skating rink. He and friends were driven by one of the friend’s fathers to the roller-skating rink around 11:00pm and arrived at about 11:30pm. The World on Wheels security surveillance video shows Anthony being checked in at 11:37pm.
Summary:
August 20, 1994, Mr. Davis, and Ms. Newsome were sitting in the vehicle that belonged to Ms. Newsome, in front of Mr. Davis mother’s house, late in the evening. Approaching midnight, four men were walking down the street toward the vehicle. As the group of men were passing the vehicle, Mr. Davis exchanged words with one of the men as he thought he knew him. They continued to walk pass the vehicle, a minute or two later one of the men walked or ran back to the passenger side of the vehicle and shot at Mr. Davis exclaiming that he get out of the (insert expletive) vehicle. Mr. Davis and the aggressor wrestled with the gun, firing a few more shots within the vehicle. The aggressor took off running and then shot again through the rear windshield of the vehicle. Mr. Davis told Ms. Newsome to drive away, and that is when he noticed the gunshot to her head leading to her demise. He ran out of the car and into his mother’s house. At that time, Mr. Davis sister called 911, and the ambulance and police received the call precisely at 12:09a.m.
Mr. Davis described the assailants as dark African American, wearing dark clothing (top and bottom) with clean-shaven haircuts.
Anthony Vasquez did not commit these crimes. He did not fit any of the descriptions that Mr. Davis gave the detectives the night the crimes occurred. Mr. Davis was sure that the perpetrators were dark skinned, clean-shaven / baldheads, wearing dark clothing. The video surveillance at Skate World of the night in question showed Anthony wearing white pants and a black shirt, light skinned, with afro-hairstyle. There was no physical evidence of any kind connecting Anthony to these crimes. No guns, shoes tracks, gunpowder residue, or any admissions of guilt. Two things that connected Anthony Vasquez to these crimes was 1) his best friend at the time, Mr. Hinton (Key Witness) who lied to save himself from being charged for the crime. Mr. Hinton signed an immunity agreement to testify against Anthony Vasquez and in exchange, he would not be prosecuted any further. Mr. Hinton told a variety of stories at every court proceeding only contradicting himself repeatedly while being caught in the most obvious lies; And 2), Mr. Davis (surviving victim) statement stating Anthony Vasquez may have been there.
New Affidavits to support Anthony’s innocence case:
- Daniel Hinton’s written affidavit admitting he lied and that Anthony Vasquez did not commit these crimes; Private Investigator, Denise Savastano’s interview with Mr. Hinton goes into detail why he lied under oath on Anthony.
- Bernard Davis written affidavit stating that he never identified Anthony and that he responded the way he did due to police persuasion.
Numerous witnesses can confirm that Anthony was at the roller-skating rink.
Anthony’s case has many red flags, ranging from crime scene evidence to the trial itself.
How you can help:
While Anthony is fighting for his exoneration, he also has filed a commutation of sentence application with Governor Gavin Newsom’s Office seeking to change his sentence so that he can have the opportunity to return home on parole and be with his family while continuing to fight to clear his name. Please help us engage the Office of Gavin Newsom to review the circumstances of Anthony’s case and help an innocent person come home.
