Gargiulo’s Restaurant: Sever Ties with NRA and Cancel Upcoming Fundraiser
The Issue
We call on Gargiulo’s Restaurant in Coney Island to sever ties with the National Rifle Association. By hosting a fundraiser at their establishment on April 12th – which includes a raffle for pistols, rifles, and shotguns – Gargiulo’s turns a blind eye to its one-hundred-year history of community engagement and instead provides support to the dangerous and un-American agenda of the NRA.
We cannot remain silent while an organization that refuses to even engage in a conversation about gun violence prevention is given a space to peddle its hysteria in our beloved borough of Brooklyn. Despite attempts among NRA members to prevent gun violence, the leadership of the NRA has sought to extinguish any effort to keep dangerous guns out of the hands of dangerous people.
On average 96 Americans – including seven children – are killed every day with guns. A majority of Americans – and 74% of NRA members – support requiring criminal background checks for gun purchases. Though there are dozens of evidence-based and constitutionally-sound policies that would preserve the lives and liberty of Americans, NRA leadership has again and again rejected any and all efforts to keep Americans safe.
The NRA opposes universal background checks, it opposes prohibiting people on the terrorist watch list from acquiring guns, and it opposes federal gun violence research. Once an organization that existed focused on marksmanship and gun safety, it now seemingly exists solely to obstruct efforts to prevent gun violence.
Let us follow the lead of brave students around this country and demand that Gargulio’s acts in the best interests of our borough and cancels this event. Let us take a step towards ending the bloodshed.
