Include a Chaos Dwarf army list in the upcoming "The Old World" wargame.
The Issue
To Andy and the team at Games Workshop/ Forgeworld studio,
Recently Games Workshop has announced that they will be resurrecting their "Old World" setting with a new war game that will serve as a new edition/spiritual successor to their classic wargame, "Warhammer Fantasy Battles." This wonderful news has been received well by the community as a whole who have missed their beloved wargame receiving official support over the past five years or so. So from the bottom of our hearts, thank you. This is what the fans have been wanting. We can have our cake and eat, winning back the Old World without losing the Age of Sigmar!.
We were delighted in a recent announcement to hear that square bases were to be used, the setting's lore would be retained and expanded upon in detail, previously discontinued factions (such as Brettonia, Orcs and Goblins and Kislev) would be refreshed and that the scale would remain the same. One line in particular resonated with us: "We want people to be able to use their old armies if they wish, or to start new ones, or to add new miniatures to old armies – whatever they want." We could not agree more.
However, we have a small concern. When we are told that "old armies" may be used, we are worried that this may not include our beloved Chaos Dwarfs as previously the studio has not always viewed them as one of the "main" races with a full army book.
Chaos Dwarfs are a visually iconic, well realised and well loved faction within the Warhammer World setting. Collectors of Chaos Dwarf armies have never received a full army book available in shops. We had a White Dwarf supplement book in 4th and 5th edition and never received a full army book in 6th edition, using "ravening hordes instead."
Towards the end of WHFB's life, we received the wonderfully realised Legion of Azgorh range. This was an army that many of us purchased. This was truly an army created by those that loved the faction. This came with rules to use Chaos Dwarfs in Warhammer Fantasy. It was a great time for us. Unfortunately the game was no longer supported by the end of 8th edition and , as all good things come to an end, recently these miniatures too have been discontinued leaving us worried that our faction may not be included in the new game.
But we Chaos Dwarf fans are nothing if not patient. We have waited. We have seen Hobgrots appear in the Age of Sigmar wargame also produced by Games Workshop. We have heard Hashut's name appear in some official lore in that setting too. It is clear that some in Games Workshop's studio, like us, still hold a flame for the Chaos Dwarfs! We have even noticed also a Chaos Dwarf symbol near Uzkulak bordering Kislev appear on some of the maps you have revealed for the new game.
We, the undersigned, are not demanding anything. We, as life long customers and fans, are simply asking that we not be left out of this game. This would not have to even be miniatures to begin with, rules alone that allow us to use our Legion of Azgorh and classic Chaos Dwarf armies upon the battlefield would be more than enough for us to happily purchase this game and its publications. It would be a tiny investment of time and energy for your studio to add our rules to any planned "ravening hordes", "compendiums" or "index" style books and would result in lots of customers such as ourselves being extremely happy.
Andy, and your team, you are clearly massive fans of The Warhammer world. The passion is coming through in everything that has been released so far. From one fan to another, please let us use the army we feel most passionate about in the game we both love.
Best wishes, best of luck with developing the new game and keep up the good work,
- Jacques Bottjer ( Warhammer fan and part time daemonsmith)
