The time has come to take down the Confederate statue erected in front of the old courthouse in Galveston, Texas.

The Issue

Is it okay to have a monument dedicated to the confederate army erected in front of the old courthouse in Galveston, Texas (the birthplace of Juneteenth) in 2015? If your answer is no sign this petition.

This monument is dedicated to a group of individuals that fought to keep the institution of slavery alive in this country which is in direct opposition of the human rights that we are all born with. We know that the confederate army fought on the wrong side of history and they lost the civil war. Since this is the United States of America and not the Confederate States of America this monument should not be displayed in such a public manner. The history of oppression associated with the confederate flag and those that support the efforts of the confederacy makes this monument unacceptable in 2015. Sign the petition if you agree that this monument should be removed.

Even before the Charleston Massacre occurred, this monument and others like it across the country should not be placed in public spaces, especially in front of any governmental building. As descendants of citizens that started Juneteenth 150 years ago in Galveston County, we ask with a strong and unified voice to remove the monument.

As evidence of the motives of the Confederacy, as if it is needed, an excerpt from a speech given by the confederate vice president Alexander Stephans on March 21, 1861 follows:

"Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea, it's foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests upon the great truth, that the Negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery-- subordination to the superior race this is natural and normal condition.[Applause by the crowd]"

With statements like this and the cheers it inspired, we know for sure that anyone who stands with the Confederacy or its relics, is no friend of what God says about our equality as humans.

TAKE IT DOWN!!!!!!!!       It's 2015!!!!!!
