Protect FWISD Teachers & Families - Extend Virtual Learning Until Nov. 2nd.

Protect FWISD Teachers & Families - Extend Virtual Learning Until Nov. 2nd.

The Issue

The back-to-school plan outlined by FWISD at the last board meeting (September 15, 2020) inadequately addressed safety and health concerns and inadequately provided for a manageable work plan for FWISD campuses to provide both in-person and virtual instruction to its students.

The Tarrant County Health Commissioner explained the dangers of returning to school, stating he would not send his own kids to in-person learning in Fort Worth at this time. There were no specific guidelines or provisions ensuring adequate PPE measures to protect teachers, staff, and students for a return to in-person learning. Additionally, the plan announced that teachers are expected to provide both virtual and in-person instruction to their students - something that is unreasonable and goes against earlier promises made by the district.

Teachers and staff should have a voice about when to return to school and also, how to return to school safely. The feedback for virtual learning has been surprisingly positive. While there is no good solution for providing excellent education to all children this year, no lives are worth risking due to rushed judgments and plans. We are asking the FWISD Board of Trustees to take the extra 4 weeks to allow FWISD to vigorously work on getting adequate PPE and procedures in place to ensure safety for all as well as come up with an adequate plan for instruction that honors all our teachers. Keep our FWISD families safe.
