Future-Proofing Australian Women’s Lightweight Rowing

The issue

Petition to Add an Open Lightweight 8+ Event to the Australian National Rowing Championships.

The Australian lightweight rowing community calls upon Rowing Australia to ensure equitable race opportunities for lightweight women by introducing an Open Lightweight 8+ event at the Australian National Rowing Championships. Currently, there is a disparity in race opportunities between male and female lightweight athletes, with men having double the number of events compared to women. This imbalance restricts the growth and development of female lightweight rowers in Australia.

1. Current Inequity in Race Opportunities.
Lightweight women’s rowing remains limited in terms of race availability compared to men. With men having access to more events, female athletes are left with fewer pathways to compete and develop their skills. We believe it is essential for both men and women to have equal opportunities to race at the highest level, fostering a fair and inclusive sporting environment.

2. Shifting Focus Due to Olympic Program Changes.
The removal of lightweight rowing from the Olympic program after Paris 2024 has significantly shifted the landscape for female lightweight rowers. Historically, the focus has been on sculling events due to their prominence in Olympic competition. However, this shift has broadened the interest and participation in sweep events, including the eight. As a result, past entry numbers in women’s lightweight sweep events are no longer an accurate reflection of future participation. The sport is evolving, and the national championship program should evolve with it to reflect this renewed focus.

3. The Value of the Lightweight Eight Event.
An Open Lightweight 8+ event provides significantly more opportunities for participation by allowing eight athletes per crew, compared to smaller boat classes. This fosters greater inclusion within the sport, enabling more athletes to compete, develop, and stay engaged in rowing. The eight is also a highly visible and prestigious event, capable of inspiring the next generation of lightweight rowers.

4. Proven Commitment and Growth in the Lightweight Community.
Over the past 12 months, the Australian lightweight rowing community has made a concerted effort to build a strong and competitive squad of lightweight rowers. This was evidenced by the recent Head of the Charles campaign, where both male and female lightweight crews represented the Australian World Lightweight Rowing Alliance, with the women’s team securing a victory in the eight event. This success highlights not only the competitiveness of Australian lightweight women on the international stage but also the growing enthusiasm and commitment within the community to sustain and expand lightweight rowing.

5. Inaccurate Representation Based on NSW Championships.
Rowing Australia’s current method of basing race schedules on participation numbers from the New South Wales Rowing Championships does not accurately reflect the national landscape. States like Western Australia and Tasmania—home to many high-performing lightweight rowers—are underrepresented in this data, leading to a skewed understanding of national participation. We propose that Rowing Australia adopts a more comprehensive approach, considering participation from all states and consultation with the lightweight community to better inform race scheduling.

6. The Lightweight Community’s Adaptation and Call for Support.
Faced with the threat of fading away from all levels of competition following the removal of lightweight events from the Olympics, the lightweight rowing community is proactively adapting its priorities to sustain the sport’s relevance and growth. The introduction of an Open Lightweight 8+ event at Nationals is a critical step in this evolution. We urge Rowing Australia to support our mission by adding this event, thereby helping to secure the future of lightweight rowing in Australia.

Our Request
We respectfully urge Rowing Australia to:
•     Add an Open Lightweight 8+ event to the Australian National Rowing Championships.
•     Double the number of race opportunities for lightweight women to align with those available to lightweight men. This will assist in providing equal racing opportunities across weight divisions for both male and female athletes.
•     Re-evaluate the race scheduling process, ensuring data from all Australian states, including Western Australia and Tasmania, are considered.
•     Support the continued growth and adaptation of lightweight women’s rowing in response to international changes, fostering an inclusive and equitable environment for all athletes.

By taking these steps, Rowing Australia can help secure the future of lightweight women’s rowing, ensuring fair and equal opportunities for current and future athletes. We, the undersigned, call on Rowing Australia to take immediate action to address this disparity and support the ongoing development of lightweight rowing in Australia.
