The Issue
At Saving Strayz, the struggle with cat overpopulation is not just an issue—it’s painfully personal. Each cat we rescue tells a story of preventable suffering, had spay and neuter assistance been available when needed. We've spent countless nights bottle-feeding orphaned kittens found freezing in barns, desperate for warmth and comfort. We've held sick and injured strays in our arms, knowing they never should have been born into such hardship. We’ve witnessed the heartbreak of compassionate families yearning to do right by these animals, yet unable to afford surgical costs.
This daily heartache is evidence of a cycle we cannot break alone. Wisconsin’s shelters are beyond capacity, saying “no” more often than “yes” due to space constraints. Low-income families and rescuers in rural communities lack the means to access vital spay and neuter services. As grim as the reality appears, there is an effective, humane, and lasting solution.
Spay and neuter programs represent the most sensible path forward for controlling animal populations. Alarmingly, one unspayed female cat, along with her descendants, can yield over 400,000 kittens within seven years. A single procedure can prevent this cycle of suffering, yet current access to these services is severely limited without statewide support.
This is a pressing community issue that extends beyond the realm of animal care. The benefits of fixed cats ripple through communities, resulting in healthier cats, safer neighborhoods, and shelters better equipped to allocate resources to those in dire need. Despite these clear advantages, Wisconsin remains devoid of the necessary funding and systemic support for these crucial programs.
We call upon Wisconsin’s state leaders to recognize the urgent need for statewide funding for spay and neuter programs, alongside support for Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) initiatives for outdoor cats. Your signature is a powerful declaration that you, too, believe in proactively shaping a humane future for our state’s animal population.
Please add your name to our petition, affirming your belief in prevention over reaction and your support for the shelters and rescues striving to make a difference. Let us transform Wisconsin into a beacon for compassionate and effective animal population management.
