Without fundraising, our libraries are fading.

When COVID wiped out in-person events it damaged every layer of our educational institutions. Now, as we continue to recover, some of our most cherished assets are being left behind.

Our elementary school libraries went from receiving an annual average of $3,500 to less than $500 during the pandemic. Now, nearly seven years later, they are still only getting less than $1,500 per year. According to the American Library Association, a typical elementary  school library costs about $4,500 to maintain. 

North Clackamas School District has limited fundraising but has tried to make up for it with annual grant funding. This has added about $15,000 to be split up among 17 elementary school libraries. Unfortunately only a few schools see that money each year, some more than others. This arrangement is not only inadequate, it is also unsustainable; due to the very nature of grants this funding could disappear at any time, leaving each school with only a few hundred a year.

By signing this petition, you are asking NCSD to address this funding crisis and develop a plan to get our libraries the support they need.
