The Issue

My brother has Autism, and I've seen firsthand the struggles he faces each day. Lack of programs for adults with Autism to aid in their education, employment, and independent living continues to perpetuate an unacceptable cycle where they remain largely ignored and unsupported. This isn't just his story, but the story of countless individuals who deserve so much more from our society.

In the United States, the CDC estimates that approximately 5.4 million adults are living with Autism. Despite this significant number, adult autism services receive far less attention and funding compared to children's services. Adults with autism often age out of school-based systems and find themselves without the resources necessary for living independent, fulfilling lives. This gap in support systems severely limits their opportunities for education, employment, and self-sufficiency.

Studies indicate that less than 20% of individuals with autism in the U.S. are employed, showing that barriers continue to exist in accessing suitable employment opportunities. Furthermore, many communities lack specialized educational programs tailored toward adult learning needs, leaving countless adults without basic life skills or further educational advancement.

Funding more programs focused on adults with autism can help bridge these gaps. We need education programs that teach essential life skills, employment training that prepares them for the workforce, and independent living support that empowers them to thrive. Programs such as job coaching, apprenticeships, and access to higher education should be made readily available and adequately funded.

States like New York have begun to take the initiative by passing bills that promote vocational training, job placement, and expanded housing for adults with autism. Such measures should serve as a model for nationwide policy.

Every individual deserves an opportunity to achieve their fullest potential, and adults with autism are no exception. By signing this petition, you're advocating for a more inclusive society that does not overlook its vulnerable members but instead champions them through improved education, employment, and independent living resources. Sign now to help us push for the necessary funding and legislative changes that can make this vision a reality for my brother and so many others in similar situations.
