Fund Food, Educational Equity for All - NYC and Brooklyn!
The Issue
Let's fight food inequity together.
Do you believe that healthy eating is a civil right?
Do you believe every child in NYC deserves a quality education so that students can attend any school they want?
Help us to convince the mayor and City Council to direct funds to local residents so they work together to make sure every child has a healthy place to live and learn and access opportunity to rise.
Seeds in the Middle believes it's time for a change in funding and focus to overcome food insecurity. We do not accept that Black and Brown neighborhoods are systemically deprived of fresh fruits and vegetables or that children must score below grade level on standardized tests.
We believe the solution is local. We believe public monies and foundation monies must be invested in community organizations and residents themselves to "teach a man or a woman or they to fish" - to build healthy businesses and quality educational experiences so everyone can rise.
Please sign this petition to support our funding asks to the NYC Council and Mayor Eric Adams for:
- At least 10 school-run farm stands, edible gardens and Hip2B Healthy Cafes so students with educators and the community can build their own sustainable, healthy businesses and create healthy places to live and learn These schools are in central and east Brooklyn, one of three neighborhoods of NYC with the highest rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and Covid-19 deaths.
- Quality after-school program at Charity Baptist Church of Brownsville, Brooklyn on Watkins Street, one of NYC"S MOST DANGEROUS AREAS, so that children have a safe place to be and bring the community together to boost public safety. The program will run 5 days a week, Monday through Friday for academic instruction plus arts and music ad movement, Saturday cultural trips and soccer, healthy food and cooking. The program will also offer mental health support like yoga, meditation. The church is donating this space for 32 weeks. Please support this.
- Brownsville MOMS Hip2B Healthy Farm and Wellness Market and Cafe run by moms from Brownsville Houses and beyond, who believe the neighborhood must have healthy options for the families.. "We don't need no more nail salons or churches here," says Ms. Trina. "Healthy eating is a civil right and we need money to have a healthy store for fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy snacks and wellness products for the community."
- Crown Heights Soccer so every child can have a chance to play soccer and learn teamwork and we can offer scholarships to all who need them.
We believe communities can transform gray to green and just need all of us to build the bridge so their neighborhoods mirror the most affluent in the city.
Please sign. We must change the city and state funding so elected officials truly support local residents and local effective efforts for positive change for all children. Let's build healthy business by the people for the people.
