Fund Every Student- Demand Fair & Full Public School Funding in Washington State

Fund Every Student- Demand Fair & Full Public School Funding in Washington State
The Issue
Every student in Washington deserves a fair shot at a quality education, but that’s not the reality today. Our state’s school funding system is leaving behind thousands of students in low-income communities, reinforcing deep disparities that affect futures for generations. Washington State’s constitution Article IX says public education is our “paramount duty,” yet today, K–12 schools make up less than 50% of the state budget; a steep drop from the 1970s when it was nearly 70%.
While Washington ranks in the top ten for overall state wealth, many districts receive thousands of dollars less per student than wealthier ones. Over 45% of Washington’s students are in high-poverty schools, and many of these schools lack updated textbooks, adequate mental health support, afterschool programs, or functioning technology. This is not just an education issue, but a justice issue.
This isn’t just unfair, it’s a violation of Washington’s constitutional responsibility to make education its “paramount duty.” Students in underfunded schools face higher dropout rates, fewer opportunities, and greater risks of poverty and homelessness.
We want:
- Greater percentage state budget be invested in public education
- Funding based on student needs, not zip codes
- Support for schools serving high-poverty communities
Every student deserves a fair shot, and by signing this petition, you are helping fight for an education system that serves every child.
