The Issue

Imagine the story of a vibrant educational program that has profoundly shaped the lives of countless students. This program is the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) at Brick Memorial High School in Brick Township, New Jersey. It embodies a vision of developing young leaders, instilling discipline, and offering a pathway to both personal and professional success for young individuals.

However, the future of this exemplary program is at risk. Due to a shortfall in funding and personnel, the AFJROTC program might be forced to close its doors at the conclusion of the 2026 school year. This could result in a significant loss not just to the students, but to the community at large that benefits from their service and leadership.

The regulations governing AFJROTC partnerships stipulate the need for two instructors to efficiently operate the program. Currently, Brick Memorial High School only has one instructor, jeopardizing the compliance and sustainability of the program. The funding for an additional instructor is crucial to maintain the program's operations and to continue the opportunities it provides to its cadets.

Let’s consider some facts: AFJROTC programs across the United States have demonstrated immense success in building young leaders who thrive in various career paths, including military and civilian. These programs boast high academic achievement rates and serve as excellent preparation for college or service academies.

The impact of shuttering the AFJROTC program would be detrimental not only to participating cadets who gain valuable life skills but also to the community that gains from the civic contributions of these young leaders. The skills taught—such as leadership, ethics, and civic responsibility—transcend the classroom and contribute to creating proactive, engaged citizens.

This petition seeks to urge the Brick Township Public Schools to allocate the necessary funding to hire a second instructor. This funding is not just an investment in the program but an investment in the future of our students and our community.

By signing this petition, you contribute to safeguarding a valuable educational initiative. We owe it to our students, our future leaders, to provide them with the tools and opportunities they need to succeed. Let's act to secure the future of the AFJROTC at Brick Memorial High School and, by extension, the future of countless young minds.

Please sign this petition to express your support and ensure the continuation of this invaluable program.

I have spoken with the Superintendent and fellow board members more than once in relation to this matter with various questions and concerns addresses, including ones outlined in your emails to me, and I can assure you that the Superintendent, myself, and my fellow members of the Board of Education are following the situation with care and assessing any and all options in our collective and enthusiastic desire to retain our JROTC program given the invaluable benefits afforded to enrollees at both of our high schools; I could speak to such value at an anecdotal level at a minimum based on positive changes I was able to see among friends and peers of mine who were enrolled in the program when I was a student at Brick Township High School from my freshman year beginning in 2013 to my graduating year of 2017. I will be candid; at present, I am not, nor is any member of the Board of Education, at liberty to disclose specific information related to developments in the matter of the JROTC teaching position as any development would involve contract negotiations which are subject to confidentiality while still in the developing stages and negotiating process so as to avoid potential legal issues that could not only negatively impact the potential future of the JROTC program in our high schools but could result in negative financial repercussions that could have an adverse impact on our district as a whole in an era in which we have experienced increased difficulty to ensuring sufficient teacher staffing levels for each of our approximately 8,500 students, including our students in the JROTC program, without needing to continuously burden taxpayers such as yourself who make all that is done in our district possible married with dwindling returns from the federal and state levels in spite of all our local residents send to Washington and Trenton, respectively on a regular basis from their respective income taxes. You are more than welcome to attend any board meeting more to the public; such meetings are normally held on the last Thursday of each month at 6:00 PM at 101 Hendrickson Ave, Brick, NJ 08724 with the exception of our summertime meetings beginning at 5:30 PM and our annual employee recognition ceremony at our regularly scheduled board meeting in May at Brick Memorial High School at 2001 Lanes Mill Rd, Brick, NJ 08724 at 6:00 PM. Please feel free to contact me. My phone number is (732) 804-2907 and my e-mail address is malgerigeorge6@gmail.com. Thank you very much for your patience and interest and I hope to be in communication with you soon! Respectfully: George Malgeri
