The Issue

Sullivan County, Tennessee, faces a pressing need for a fully operational, full-time juvenile court. The Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth recently ranked Sullivan County as 92/95 for youth crime, and the Tennessee Department of Health lists Sullivan County as the highest in the state for Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome births.

Over the last 5 years, the part time Sullivan County Juvenile Court has heard between 1,700 and 2,000 cases per year. The absence of a full-time juvenile court means that many cases involving children are delayed or inadequately addressed. This is not only a disservice to justice but also to the future of our community's children. Juvenile cases require sensitive and timely handling to ensure that young offenders are given the opportunity for rehabilitation and restoration.

Statistics show that early intervention and properly managed juvenile cases can significantly decrease recidivism rates and improve the chances of young individuals becoming productive members of society. Communities with full-time juvenile courts witness more efficient handling of cases and better outcomes for all parties involved.

Creating a full-time juvenile court will require funding, but the long-term benefits far outweigh the costs. Investing in such a court means investing in the future of our community, ensuring that young offenders receive the guidance they need to redirect their lives while providing victims and families with closure and justice.

We call upon the Sullivan County Commission and all stakeholders to prioritize the establishment of a full-time juvenile court. By doing so, we can create a more robust, efficient, and just system that serves the best interests of our community. Help us build a future where every child has the opportunity for redemption and success.
