Require masks and other safety precautions in Fulton County Schools in August.
The Issue
CALL THE OFFICE OF SUPERINTENDENT MIKE LOONEY — (470)-254-6890
EMAIL MIKE LOONEY: superintendent@fultonschools.org
GOALS: Consider the following safety measures MANDATORY in the event that schools in Fulton County are to open their doors in August:
- Masks/face coverings must be worn in the building due to crowded hallways and the inability to stay a minimum of 6 feet during transit from class to class as well as other areas like the bathrooms and classrooms.
- Face coverings/masks should be distributed to students who don't bring them.
- Students not seen wearing a face covering will be asked to put one on and repeated offenders should not be allowed in the physical school building due to the risk they pose the school population.
- Bathrooms should be 1-2 people at a time and contain antibacterial handsoap and automatic hand dryers as well as contactless hand sanitizer dispensers.
- Halls should be monitored to limit excess traffic in between classes.
- Mandate regular surface cleanings inside of classrooms and communal areas.
- Limit occupancy in the media center/library to encourage social distancing.
- Classes should be split up into bells if not already (ex. A, B, C, D, etc...) to minimize foot traffic in between classes.
- In fine arts classes, such as band, spit may not be discarded from the instrument or valves inside the school, if at all, and such instruments might need to be deemed unacceptable,
- Fine arts classes such as band, chorus, and orchestra, should be set up to accommodate social distancing and if such arrangements are not possible, consider cutting the classes smaller or alternating throughout the week.
- Eliminate students eating in the cafeteria. Lunch could be eaten in students' 4th-period or 3rd-period class or in classrooms of choosing and have a limit of students that can be in the room at once.
- Teachers should disperse groups of students larger than 2 or 3 that are not distancing (aka huddles).
- Change the opening time of the school to prevent mass amounts of students roaming the school and congregating in the hallways.
- Shift most or all learning digitally to avoid paper and pencil as much as possible to reduce spreading through objects.
- Eliminate uniforms in in-person physical education to avoid use of the locker rooms and promote social distancing.
As COVID cases continue to spike and increase in many states, we need to be more prepared so that we can slow and stop the spread.
I encourage you to sign this petition so that Fulton County Schools knows that we must reopen schools safely.
