Fully investigate mining disaster, and prosecute
This petition had 179 supporters
The Massey Energy mine disaster must be more fully and publicly investigated, as well as prosecuted. Massey Energy has been cited for 38,997 safety violations since 2005. Methane gas had been detected in the mine that subsequently exploded, murdering 29 miners. This situation highlights why standing up for workers is so important. Union mines are much safer than non-union mines. Union miners have representation, and can refuse unsafe work, fight for better conditions, file grievances, and look out for each other. Americans need to know how this tragedy was allowed to happen, much more thoroughly. Please hold much more public hearings, and work for better safety enforcement, worker and union rights, and accountability for mining companies. Appropriate penalties must be enforced, and responsible parties made to answer to the families and the public. This sort of disaster must never happen again; although, it will if they're not appropriately prosecuted.
