Brownsville State University

Brownsville State University

The Issue

The Brownsville State University Black Panthers are asking for Frostburg State University to engage in radical change in regard to how it approaches raising awareness to Brownsville, the African American community founded by Tamer Brown, a formerly enslaved woman, in 1866, which FSU now stands on the today. This was a thriving community until its systematic dismantling by the State of Maryland, City of Frostburg, as well as FSU all in concert with the KKK.

We are asking for the following changes to be instituted:

- For the integration of the education of the history of Brownsville and its people along with the role of the State of Maryland, City of Frostburg, and Frostburg State University in the destruction of Brownsville.

- For the university to officially recognize February 4th as “Brownsville Day” and for “Brownsville Day” to be officially listed as part of the University Calendar.

- For the Brownsville Monument to be provided the same attention and support that your bobcat statue was provided in the spring of 2019 and for the monument to be constructed as soon as possible.

- For the indefinite occupation of the Lincoln School by Frostburg City Police to cease effective immediately.

- For the Lincoln School renovations to be prioritized effective immediately.

- For the university to pass an increase of mandatory fees by $10 per student per semester to be utilized for the purpose of a reparations fund for descendants of Brownsville.

- For the name of FSU to be changed to Brownsville State University

All of our demands are expanded upon further in our open letter to FSU's president which is included as part of this petition, the link to which is included below.
