From Senior Citizen to Seasoned Citizen for Positive Identity

From Senior Citizen to Seasoned Citizen for Positive Identity
The Issue
As a Seasoned Adult representing fellow Seasoned Citizens within Michigan’s labor force, I have seen the emotional and psychological impact our cultural language norms can have. Often, in my role, I have had the humbling occasion to assist fellow citizens who have communicated feelings of dejection due to societal stigma around aging. This stigma, I believe, is propagated by labels like the term “Senior Citizen” – a label that, to some, evokes imagery of decrepit, useless individuals incapable of contributing to society.
Conversations with clients have often ended in shared tears, as both men and women express experiencing emotional sensations of being unwanted or unemployable due to their 'senior' status. Furthermore, during personal doctor's visits where I've been asked if I was able to physically take care of myself without any previous indication of disability or deterioration, it became clear how deeply ingrained these negative stereotypes are within our societal systems.
I firmly believe that our language plays a significant role in shaping our mindset and resultant actions. Isn't it time we changed our narrative to favor positivity and respect toward our Seasoned citizens who hold years of invaluable wisdom and experience?
As an alternative term, “Seasoned Citizens” carries the connotation of maturity and wisdom, symbolizing the myriad of ways that our seasoned citizens contribute significantly to our society. We ask that this term be formally recognized and adopted by our society as a small but impactful step toward fostering an environment of inclusion and respect.
We call upon you to make this change, affirm our Seasoned citizens for the vibrant contributors we are and not to be shunned as societal burdens. Please sign this petition and make a stand for a positive and inclusive societal landscape for all citizens.
