From Child Labor to Learning: Advocating for Education, Not Exploitation

The Issue

My name is Ashley Jayn F. Fernandez, a former Community-Based Child Representative of Davao City for the years 2021-2022. I have witnessed firsthand the heartbreaking reality of child labor and exploitation in our community. This petition represents my advocacy, 'From Child Labor to Learning,' which emphasizes the importance of education over exploitation.

Every child has an inherent right to education - a right that is often stripped away when they are forced into labor. This not only deprives them of their childhood but also perpetuates a cycle of poverty and deprivation that can last for generations.

Education is one of the most potent tools we possess to break this cycle. It provides children with opportunities for growth, development, and prosperity in life. However, many marginalized and impoverished children are at risk as they are more susceptible to exploitative labor practices.

Exploitative labor can have severe physical, psychological, and emotional consequences on children's well-being. It robs them of their potential while exposing them to harmful environments that no child should ever experience.

According to the Human Rights Career, child labor is the 6th spot as the issue that children are facing today. Additionally, UNICEF reports that more than 1 in 5 kids aged 5-17 years old are forced into labor in the world’s poorest countries. The causes of child labor vary, but poverty is the most common driver. When families and communities live in extreme poverty, everyone – including very young kids – must contribute to the household by working. Furthermore, according to the International Labour Organization, a total of 152 million children – 64 million girls and 88 million boys – are in child labor globally, accounting for almost one in ten of all children worldwide.

It's time we prioritize our children's learning over laborious tasks meant for adults; it's time we advocate for their rights rather than turn a blind eye towards their exploitation; it's time we ensure every child gets access to quality education instead of being forced into workstations.

Join me in advocating for these vulnerable children by signing this petition today! Let us collectively raise our voices against child labor and champion every child’s right to learn!
