FRISCO ISD SAFETY & ETHICS

The Issue

We are advocating for the introduction of a societal ethics curriculum and enhanced security measures in Frisco ISD, with the aim of expanding this initiative throughout Texas and ultimately the United States. This effort seeks to address the growing concerns of youth violence, emotional instability, and the absence of ethical guidance in our education system—while simultaneously improving school security to protect students and staff.

Recent tragic events underscore the urgent need for these changes. In Texas alone, we have witnessed heartbreaking incidents, such as the April 2025 stabbing of a 17-year-old during a track meet in Frisco ISD, and the March 2025 fatal stabbing of a 14-year-old in Killeen ISD. In Memphis, Tennessee, a 10-year-old was stabbed by an 11-year-old classmate in February 2025. These incidents reflect a broader, nationwide pattern of increasing youth violence, compounded by insufficient security measures. Clearly, there is a critical gap not only in safety protocols but also in the emotional and ethical education our children are receiving.

While academics are vital, it is equally important that we equip students with emotional intelligence and ethical principles to navigate today’s challenges. A societal ethics curriculum would provide students with essential tools to manage emotions, resolve conflicts peacefully, and understand personal responsibility.

Key elements of the curriculum would include:

  • Emotional regulation and conflict resolution
  • Honesty, integrity, and responsibility
  • Respect for others, the law, and societal norms
  • Critical thinking and ethical decision-making

This curriculum would begin in Frisco ISD, with the goal of expanding it across Texas and beyond. It would evolve at each education level, ensuring all students develop a solid foundation in ethical and emotional skills, preparing them to become responsible, empathetic adults.

Curriculum Implementation:

  • Kindergarten through Elementary School: Focus on character development, conflict resolution, teaching respect, responsibility, and non-violent conflict resolution.
  • Middle School: Emphasize ethical decision-making, critical thinking, and moral discussions, helping students understand the consequences of their actions and how to handle peer pressure.
  • High School: Advanced studies on legal consequences, emotional self-regulation, and real-world ethical decision-making in various life scenarios.
  • College/University: In-depth study of professional ethics, focusing on the application of ethical principles in careers, leadership, law, business, and social responsibility. Service-learning projects would allow students to practice ethical decision-making in real-world contexts.

Enhanced Security Measures:

In addition to moral education, schools must implement effective security measures to safeguard students and staff. This includes policies such as clear backpacks for all school attendance and events as well as the installation of metal detectors to prevent weapons from entering school grounds. Combining these security measures with a strong ethical foundation would create a safer, more supportive learning environment for all students.

Why This Matters:

  • Reduces juvenile crime by instilling personal accountability and ethical decision-making
  • Improves emotional regulation and prevents violent outbursts, fostering healthier relationships
  • Strengthens community values by teaching respect, integrity, and responsibility
  • Promotes better mental health outcomes by cultivating emotional intelligence, empathy, and self-regulation
  • Increases school safety through enhanced security measures like clear backpacks and metal detectors

These tragedies are just a few examples of the growing moral, emotional, and security crises facing our youth. By starting this program in Frisco ISD and advocating for its expansion statewide and nationwide, we can address these issues head-on. By integrating ethical education with enhanced security, we will create a safer environment where students can thrive.
