The 2020-21 school year is approaching and families are divided between virtual learning modality and Face to Face lessons. Some of these families have always been determined to go one way or the other and are comfortable with their decision. Some other have been doubting their decision until the end according to personal circumstances, heath conditions, financial situations and other reasons. These families find themselves in an intermediate position where they don't have the privilege and the time to sit with their kids at a determined time of the day and coach them through the synchronous lessons but may have some time later during the day or maybe some days of the week/weekend to work with their kids. Here I am representing these family who are concerned about their kids health and public heath in general and still want to stay virtual without affecting their kid’s academic performance.

This is our particular  situation. We a have a future 2nd grade daughter and me and my husband are both working full time. I work in a hospital and my working days have already been reduced from 5 to 3. My husband right now can work from home but his schedule varies and he is often busy with meeting and phone calls at unpredictable times. We know we are lucky enough in this tough time and we are grateful. We value the importance of social interaction and face to face learning and for this reason we opted at first for F2F. We have been thinking a lot in the past week about risks and benefits of F2F and, at the end, we changed our mind and opted for virtual. We already know my kid is not going to be able to attend some of the synchronous appointments but we thought that right now the risks of sending her to school outweigh the benefits. For us, and for many other families I have been in contact with through social medias, flexibility and grace would be a blessing that would make the difference. We are asking for the possibility to postpone the deadline for homework submission to Sunday night, the opportunity to record the lessons and rewatch at our convenience and flexibility with attendance records for synchronous lessons.

I have been talking with parents with similar situations, forced to decide between sacrificing their jobs by choosing the virtual platform or risking their kids/family member’s health by sending them to school for F2F. Some parents also have multiple kids to coach at the same time which makes the situation hard to handle. Others have to take their special need kid for therapy sessions everyday and are forced to leave the other kid alone with the IPAD to follow synchronous lessons. It's clear that not all the parents who choose virtual to preserve their kid's health have the privilege to spend the day sitting with them at the required times and there are a multitude of different scenarios who would benefit from flexibility in the virtual setting as well.  We read that families who choose F2F in the beginning and are now forced to virtual are granted that flexibility and I personally think they well deserve it. But, at the same time, I believe it would be graceful to extend it also to the families in need who opted for the virtual platform not because they had plenty of free time but because of their concern for the public health.
