Dear Friends,
On October 15, voters in Victoria will have the opportunity to elect nine trustees to School District 61 board. On behalf of the Friends of Vic High, I am proud to announce our endorsement of Angela Carmichael for School District 61 School Board Trustee. Angela is the VCPAC Chair and a member of the Friends of Vic High, someone that has worked hard to advocate for students and families, and who has been persistent in bringing focus to the ongoing systemic inequalities that continue to disadvantage marginalized students in School District 61.
More about Angela in her own words:
"I was born and raised in a small coal mining community on Cape Breton Island. My family and community have always been close-knit. I have resided in Victoria's Fernwood area since 2005.
When my oldest son went to school, I wanted to be as involved as possible in his education. I began volunteering for everything I could and eventually became the PAC president. I advocated for the needs of vulnerable students in inner-city schools by ensuring there were safe routes to and from school, painted murals to deter graffiti, and advocated for a music space when the school lost theirs due to overcrowding.
I was asked to join the VCPAC as a director of communications and then I was elected the Chair. As VCPAC Chair I represented all parents in SD61 at the Board Table and advocated for individual families who were in need of assistance.
My platform was to be focused on the current issues we see in this District, EA recruitment and retention, a stronger relationship with The First Nations, a zero-tolerance racism policy, and equity in the great socio-economic divide in Victoria. Now, however, I just want to ensure a slate with archaic ideas does not remove rights from students who identify as LGBTQ2S+"
Angela has also been endorsed by the Greater Victoria Teachers Association.
Please Vote for Angela Carmichael on October 15. We need more engaged citizens with independent voices like Angela at SD61. Thank you.
