Stop Colocation

The Issue

I am writing to express my opposition to the colocation of a Los Angeles International Charter from moving on to the campus of Franklin High School.

I am opposed to this because colocation will limit students access to college counselor, gym, auditorium, library and band.

Colocation will take precious time and resources away from the school as the principal and faculty will be required to engage in administrative tasks and meetings to manage scheduling and resources now shared between both schools. A collocation will put Franklin in a compromised position as the teachers, staff and principal attempt to juggle day-to-day operations along with responsibilities of sharing the campus with an unrelated school.

The charter franchise will compete with Franklin for enrollment and students, and less students at Franklin means less funding and staffing for the school. In many instances, once established on public school campuses, charters can create a divisive two tier system which is frequently based on class and race. In addition to dividing campuses, these charter franchise schools begin to encroach more and more on a school's space over time and can overtake a school campus.

Colocation will hurt school morale. School morale is not quantifiable, but it is a very critical element to student health and well being. A competing, unaccountable, privately-funded school with children from other areas and children from our own community who have been recruited, will likely be an uncomfortable and unexplainable phenomenon at Franklin High School.

We believe this is a social justice issue. The installment of charter schools on public school campuses threaten the civil nature of public schools by introducing private education agendas that may not be in accord with defining elements of our civil rights. Charter schools have been unchecked and unaccountable for many years. As a result, they have grown in number and have begun to have a negative effect on communities. Charter schools are threatening the progress of public schools.
