Fresno City College Students Demand Rob Fuentes' Resignation
The Issue
Rob Fuentes is President of the State Center Community College District Board of Trustees, the governing body overseeing Fresno City College, Reedley College, Clovis Community College, and Willow International, a district that serves thousands of undocumented students, DACA recipients, and students from mixed-status families.
According to Fresnoland reporting published June 25, 2026, while serving as Board President, Fuentes was simultaneously working as an Assistant U.S. Attorney under a Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney, defending ICE detention in at least 124 immigration cases, including habeas corpus proceedings brought by people detained by immigration authorities. One case involves a father of three U.S. citizen children, detained since September 2025 after a routine traffic stop, whose family has been separated while Fuentes' office defended that detention in court.
At the same time, Fuentes was running for Fresno City Council District 1 on a platform supposedly supporting the "abolition of ICE," publicly calling the agency "unlawful and unhinged." Fresno immigration attorney George Rios, who reviewed the case record, said Fuentes' stated ideals and his professional conduct point in opposite directions.
Fuentes was placed on administrative leave and resigned his prosecutor position only after the story broke. He's called his departure retaliation for criticizing ICE, but that doesn't answer the real question: did his ICE casework ever influence decisions he made as Board President? He still hasn't said whether he told his fellow trustees about this work.
SCCCD has made public commitments to protect undocumented students, Dream Centers on every campus, know-your-rights protocols, materials in nine languages including Spanish, Hmong, and Punjabi. Fuentes presided over those commitments while his own casework ran in the opposite direction.
The Associated Student Government of Fresno City College has passed a formal Vote of No Confidence and is calling on Fuentes to resign, and on the rest of the Board to remove him if he won't.
We're asking the SCCCD Board of Trustees to remove Rob Fuentes as Board President. Students deserve leadership whose actions match the values this District claims to stand for.
