John Gannon is a 75-year-old lifelong Republican from Texas who voted for President Trump. Today, he's pleading for the president to release his fiancée, Yasmin Suarez Reyes, from ICE detention.

Suarez Reyes, an immigrant from Venezuela who holds Spanish citizenship, entered the United States legally in 2023 and applied for asylum before her visa expired. That case is still pending. In the meantime, she got a work permit and a Texas driver's license, and she has no criminal record. None of that mattered on July 24, when ICE agents in plainclothes swarmed her at Houston's airport as she and Gannon prepared to fly to a business convention, and pulled her away without explanation.

She's now been held for nearly two weeks at a detention center in Conroe, Texas, while Gannon waits for her at home.

Gannon says he regrets his vote. Speaking to CBS News, he said: "They are picking up law-abiding citizens. They're destroying families, jobs." Asked what he'd say to the president directly, Gannon said he would ask just one question: "What are you doing?" His message was simple: go after people who've actually committed crimes, and leave families like his alone.

Suarez Reyes is one of many people swept up in a recent wave of ICE arrests at airports around the country, many of them, like her, holding valid work permits and pending immigration cases rather than any criminal history.

An engaged couple shouldn't be separated because Suarez Reyes did exactly what U.S. immigration law allowed her to do while her case worked its way through the system. She deserves a fair legal review, not indefinite detention.
