In Verona, Wisconsin, the sight of our American flag is a proud representation of our nation’s values and sacrifices. However, the first thing you see when coming into Verona from Madison on Hwy M, at the corner of Cross Country Rd and North Main St (Hwy M), is the American flag horribly tangled and pulled downward by the gay pride flag hoisted on the same pole. This isn’t a one-time occurrence. It’s been tangled with the gay flag all year long! The FLAG is not to be treated and disrespected this way. It’s a slap in the face to everyone who loves this country and our military that have fought and died for it! It’s so shameful that this mayor took it upon himself to sneakily put them up all over the city. Nothing should ever be flying alongside it, allowing our FLAG to fly strong, proud, and free by itself! This disgusting scene is a dishonor and an embarrassment to most people living in Verona. This situation is not only disrespectful to the symbol of our nation but also distressing and frustrating to many residents who had no opportunity to voice their opinion on whether such symbolic changes were desirable.

The American flag deserves unfettered space to fly freely, embodying the ideals of liberty, unity, and commitment to which so many have dedicated and sacrificed their lives. Seeing it constantly pulled down, tangled, and restricted by any other flag is disheartening for those who hold its representation dearly.

The city of Verona, like others, should engage in inclusive discussion and decision-making, taking into account the diverse opinions and emotions of its residents before altering shared public spaces with symbols that may not align with everyone's values or sentiments. This petition calls for the removal of gay flags from city flagpoles to respect the prominence of the American flag and ensure it remains free of obstruction.

Although supporting diversity and inclusion is vital, it should not come at the expense of the symbols that unite us. To rectify this oversight and respect the sentiments of Verona's residents, we urge the city council to reconsider the placement of these flags.
