In the 1980s, a political refugee fled Cuba seeking freedom from Fidel Castro's dictatorship, only to find himself embroiled in a race war in the United States. The judicial system failed him, and he faced unjust punishment while dealing with a situation no different from that of countless others who found themselves victims of the era's socio-political turbulence. At almost 65 years old, much of his life has been spent staring at the walls of ADX Florence MAX, cruelly isolated, with no visitation, no newspaper, no television, no phone calls just staring at the wall since the 90's for actions during perilous times.
He escaped Cuba in search of safety and opportunity but only found a different kind of struggle in the U.S. The narrative painted against him was one of monstrosity, yet the reality of the time was far more complex, a survival amidst harsh, racially charged conditions. Indicative of the era's climate, he provided a sanctuary for his fellow Hispanics and anyone else in need, seeking to shield his community from the looming threat of drugs and violence threatening to engulf New York.
Judge Martin's decision to sentence him to a life of such severity is a blatant violation of the 8th Amendment, overlooking the humanitarian aspect of his actions. While others in similar or worse situations have received far lighter sentences, he remains imprisoned, an outdated emblem of an America fraught with racial tensions.
This man deserves the chance to live the remainder of his life beyond prison walls. A reevaluation of his case is imperative for justice to prevail. Grant him the dignity of freedom so he can finally live the life that was unjustly denied to him. By signing this petition, you contribute to righting a significant wrong, bringing attention to a story of resilience and injustice that must not be forgotten. Please join us in advocating for his release.
