Free Subway Fare for New York Residents

Free Subway Fare for New York Residents
The Issue
To the Leadership of Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Officials of New York City
We, the undersigned residents of New York City, respectfully request the implementation of free subway fares for city residents, with special consideration for parents and guardians transporting children to school.
For many families, daily commuting costs create a serious financial burden. Parents often make four subway trips per school day — accompanying children in the morning and returning home, then repeating the same trip in the afternoon. At current fares, this can total about $12 per day, adding up to approximately $240 per month , and $2880for a single parent during the school year. Over time, this becomes a significant strain on already tight household budgets.
Public transportation is an essential service. Families rely on it not by choice, but by necessity . We need to get children safely to school, to reach work, and to participate fully in city life. Making subway travel free for residents, especially for parents with school-aged children, would:
- Reduce financial pressure on working families
- Improve school attendance and punctuality
- Promote equity for low- and middle-income households
Encourage greater use of public transit - Support a healthier, more accessible city
New York City thrives when its residents can move freely and affordably. We believe free or heavily subsidized subway fares for residents — starting with families transporting children — is an investment in education, economic stability, and community well-being.
We respectfully urge city leaders and the MTA to explore and implement this policy for the benefit of all New Yorkers.
