The Issue

If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am not for others, what am I? And if not now, when?

Our campaign is a deeply personal one, born out of the heart-wrenching experiences of those directly impacted by the Bhutanese genocide of the 1990s and the subsequent imprisonment of those who dared to raise their voices against injustice. Our senior leadership comprises individuals who were forced out of their birth country, Bhutan, while our youth leadership consists of those born in refugee camps in the aftermath. We care because these political prisoners are not just statistics or faceless victims; they are our family members, friends, and neighbors.

The plight of these political prisoners is a reminder that human rights violations continue unabated in many parts of the world. It's estimated that over 35 remain imprisoned on politically motivated charges in Bhutan (Human Rights Watch). Their only crime was to stand up for what they believed in - democracy and freedom. 5 of these political prisoners are extremely sick and without access to any form of healthcare.

These brave individuals have suffered far too long under harsh conditions with limited access to necessities or legal representation. They deserve justice and an opportunity to rebuild their lives outside prison walls.

We call upon international human rights organizations, governments around the world, and all people committed to justice and freedom to join us in urging the government of Bhutan to release these political prisoners immediately.

We urge you to sign this petition today; your support can make a difference for these people who have sacrificed their entire lives for the Bhutanese cause.
