Free Periods for Middle Schools in LISD

Free Periods for Middle Schools in LISD
The Issue
Carrying a backpack that weighs over 20-30 pounds every single day is not just physically taxing, but it also adds to the stress of our already hectic academic lives. As a student within the Lewisville Independent School District (LISD), I find myself overwhelmed with the quantity of homework and the lack of time to manage it all. This situation leaves us, the students, mentally fatigued and physically exhausted, which should not be the reality of our middle school experience.
What if we could change this? By implementing a dedicated free period or study hall during our school day, we would have the invaluable opportunity to manage our workload more effectively. This initiative would not only reduce the weight of our backpacks as we can complete assignments and projects using school resources, but it would significantly alleviate onsite stress providing much-needed downtime, which is crucial for our mental health and academic performance.
Research conducted by the National Education Association suggests that study halls can increase student performance by allowing time for self-directed learning and individual attention to problem areas in various subjects. In districts where free periods have already been implemented, there has been a marked improvement in both student satisfaction and their grades.
In addition, the physical strain from carrying heavy backpacks has been a concern highlighted by numerous educational and health organizations, including the American Occupational Therapy Association. They emphasize the importance of reducing backpack weight to prevent back and shoulder pain among young students, an issue that can lead to chronic health problems in the future.
We call on LISD's administration to recognize the benefits of integrating a free period across all middle schools, ensuring that every student can benefit from a more balanced and manageable academic life. Let's work together to create an environment where learning and health are prioritized equally.
