Judson McCann, age 14 left a comment on his mothers instagram post about gun laws. Judsons comment was left because he does not agree with his mothers views. Once Judson was home, he was aggressivaly cussed out by his father who said things like "I am restraining my self right now" and a constant screaming. Judson was only trying to voice his opinion and even if it would have been better to discuss this with his parents in private, we refuse to let him be punished for exercising his freedom of speech. Taking away his phone as a punishment has also caused him practical difficulties like not being able to buy lunch or getting to school on time. It is important to encourage open communication and respect for different opinions within families. Punishing a child for expressing their thoughts might have long lasting negative effects on their mental health and their relationship with their family.
