Free journalist Yana Suvorova from Russian prison

Free journalist Yana Suvorova from Russian prison
The Issue
Freedom for Yana Suvorova — Ukrainian Journalist Imprisoned by Russian Occupation Forces.
‼️ 21-year-old Ukrainian journalist Yana Suvorova has been sentenced to 14 years in prison by the illegal Russian occupation authorities in Donetsk.
Yana was detained in 2023 by Moscow’s troops in her hometown of Melitopol, which was invaded and occupied by Russian forces.
She ran a Telegram channel titled “Melitopol is Ukraine” 🇺🇦, where she documented life under occupation and shared verified information.
For this, she was accused of “transmitting information about Russian positions” and declared a criminal by the occupiers.
After her arrest, Yana was initially held in an old warehouse in industrial zone and later transferred to a detention facility in occupied Mariupol and Donetsk.
Now, she faces 14 years in a Russian-controlled prison. Her family has very limited contact with her, and even the International Committee of the Red Cross has been denied access.
This sentence represents yet another flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions, which prohibit the persecution of civilians and journalists in occupied territories.
🆘 Russia continues to ignore international law — torturing, imprisoning, and killing journalists who perform their professional duty.
Yana turned 21 on October 13. She was sentenced just days after her birthday. Born in 2004, she represents a generation of young Ukrainians whose lives have been stolen by war and repression.
We, journalists, editors, media organizations, and advocates for press freedom, demand:
- Immediate release of Yana Suvorova and all journalists unlawfully detained by Russia and its occupation authorities.
- Access for the International Committee of the Red Cross and independent observers to all places of detention in occupied Ukrainian territories.
- Accountability for those responsible for her arrest, torture, and sentencing in violation of international law.
- Action from international organizations — including the United Nations, OSCE, and the European Union — to defend the safety and rights of journalists in occupied Ukraine.
✍️ We call on the global journalistic community to raise Jana’s name, share her story, and speak out against this injustice.
#FreeJanaSuvorova #MelitopolIsUkraine #JournalismIsNotACrime
It is imperative for the global community and especially those who value free speech and truth-telling to stand in solidarity with Yana. We must pressure Russian authorities because by securing Yana's freedom, we not only rescue a fearless voice but also reaffirm our commitment to press freedom worldwide.
