The Issue

Sherwan Sherwani is not only a journalist whose rights have been violated; he is also my beloved friend. His unjust imprisonment has cast a long shadow over his life, affecting his wife and their children immeasurably over these past few years.

But this fight goes beyond just one individual. It represents a broader struggle for freedom of expression, press freedom, and the rights of all journalists to speak the truth without fear of imprisonment or political persecution. No family should endure such heartache simply for advocating honesty and transparency.

Freedom of expression is a cornerstone of any democratic society, and when journalists like Sherwan are silenced, it sets a dangerous precedent that threatens the very fabric of democracy and human rights. According to Reporters Without Borders, the situation for journalists in the Kurdistan region has become increasingly perilous, with numerous accounts of harassment, threats, and imprisonment. Sherwan's case highlights the urgent need for reform.

The Kurdistan Regional Government must take immediate action to release Sherwan Sherwani unconditionally and ensure that no more journalists are unjustly detained. By doing so, they can reaffirm their commitment to human rights and align with international standards regarding press freedom.

We urge the government to open dialogues with human rights organizations and media bodies to establish safeguards that protect journalists in the region. There should be transparent investigations into claims of misconduct and support mechanisms in place for journalists facing threats.

Sign this petition to stand in solidarity with Sherwan Sherwani and journalists everywhere. We must demand his release and call for the protection of press freedom in the Kurdistan region. Together, we can make a difference and ensure the voices of truth-tellers are never silenced.
