Help free my brother, Hasan Askree, an Australian citizen, from Pakistani prison
The issue
My sweet brother, Hasan, was living in Sydney, working as a risk analyst. Every weekend he would spend time with us and is an adored uncle to my kids.
Hasan returned to Pakistan to care for our sick and aging parents. One morning in October 2020, our lives changed forever when the Pakistani military barged into our family home and took him into custody.
My innocent brother was thrown into solitary confinement for allegedly writing a critical letter to the now-retired chief of army, Qamar Javed Bajwa, asking him to resign. He was taken by the military intelligence before he could post the letter. My brother was made a scapegoat for the Pakistani military to demonstrate how they deal with critics.
Hasan is in 24/7 solitary confinement in a high security prison. His cell is infested with mould and insects. He has not been in sunlight or fresh air for over two years. Months passed before he was allowed to write a letter to us, his family. It is wrongful confinement and prosecution and a grave miscarriage of justice.
All this while, we’ve had barely any support from the Australian government. I’m calling on the Australian High Commission in Pakistan to allot us a caseworker, to advocate for Hasan’s prison transfer to near his hometown, and for his hearings to be brought forward in an open fair court.
We want Penny Wong, the Foreign Affairs Minister, to bring up my brother’s case with her counterpart and help improve his current conditions.
It has been an incredibly painful time for our family. So far, we’ve been suffering in silence but now we need your support. We need justice and dignity.
Hauled before a court martial I wouldn't even call it an arrest. I would say it's an abduction from the very date that they took him. This is wrongful confinement and prosecution
I have uprooted my life as a public school teacher in Sydney. I’ve left my family to come to Pakistan to care for my parents and fight for my brother’s freedom. For years, we’ve been writing letters and escalating the matter with no results.
The Australian government has a responsibility towards him. We now need your help to convince the government to stop the human rights violations against Hasan. Please sign and share my petition to help.
