The Issue

I recently took the Earth and Space Science Regents exam, and I was shocked to find questions about topics that we hadn’t even covered in class. This experience wasn't unique to me; all my friends and fellow classmates who took the exam felt the same frustration and confusion. It's important to mention that this is only the second year of the newly revised Regents, and it was noticeably more challenging for us students.

The purpose of the Regents exams is to fairly assess our understanding of the coursework, but when the test includes material that was neither reviewed nor taught, it's simply not a fair evaluation of our knowledge or skills. The education system should not put students in a position where they are set up to fail due to poor alignment between the curriculum and the assessment.

According to the New York State Education Department guidelines, the curriculum should prepare students adequately for the Regents exams, ensuring all topics on the test have been comprehensively taught. Yet, the latest Earth and Space Science Regents seems to have detracted from these guidelines, instead presenting a test that many students found unfair and unexpectedly difficult.

Furthermore, studies show that high-stakes testing can significantly impact a student's academic future and enthusiasm for learning. Unreasonably difficult exams not aligned with the curriculum can have a negative impact on student motivation and self-esteem, causing undue stress and anxiety.

I propose that the New York State Education Department reevaluate the content of the Earth and Space Science Regents, especially focusing on removing or curving questions on topics not adequately addressed in the classroom. Additionally, it would be beneficial to have clearer communication and alignment between the course syllabus and the exam content to ensure students are being tested on what they have truly learned.

By signing this petition, you are supporting a change towards fairer and more accurate assessments that reflect our actual classroom learning, not unexpected or unreviewed topics. Let's ensure that our education system serves its primary purpose – to teach and to enlighten, not to confuse or undermine students.

Please sign this petition to demand a fairer Earth and Space Science Regents exam that reflects the curriculum we are taught in school.
