India Against Censorship

The Issue

"Censorship? Illegal? FIRs/ takedowns for licentious, "obscene", 'inappropriate' material?

Why?"

"Because the goverment decides what can and cannot be consumed by its citizens"

This is exactly what has currently gained roots currently in India, with the government curbing free speech(if it ever truly existed) and freedom of expression.

With over (as of August 2019) 27.3 million paid subscribers for Altbalaji, that speaks a lot about the content people are 'paying to watch' and giants like Amazon and netflix falling not far behind.

Ullu app led by CEO Vibhu Agarwal boasts of a subscriber base north of 4 million who subscribe for the content it specializes in - sensuality and storytelling. While erotica apps like Nuefliks scintillates with more than a million downloads on android alone.

Yet with the govt now interfering with the content aired on OTTs, they perpetually run the risk of being 'censored' or worse - taken down and arraigned.

"Why?"

"Because the powers that be decides what can and cannot be consumed by its citizens". It matters little if you are 18+ or 100+, what matters is, the government has decided so.

Unlike linear medium of television, digital content is non-linear. Moreover, you pay for what you want to watch with your bank information. Yes, that goes for even erotic adult content and pornography.

If children are gaining access to such content, maybe its the parents who need to be monitored as it may come under child abuse and neglect.

What needs to be monitored is whether proper parental controls are in place. Whether there is adequate age classification in place and what measures are in place to prevent minors and unconsenting individuals from gaining access to content they are not supposed to.

On the flip side, one should not forget the censorship is also in place to curtail anything remotely opining against the govt and its policies. But as is only becoming, voicing one’s opinion through media should be the inherent backbone of any thriving democracy, not censoring and curtailing the freedom of the media and the press.

The US has its 1st amendment protecting its freedom of speech... so do we. But unlike India US citizens choose to be vociferous against prohibition and eventually they stand where they are - a free country.

Whether we will voice our own opinion against what is meant to subjugate us or stand up against it, remains ardently to be seen.

Lastly, if you sign this petition, don’t stop there. Pass it on. Share it with your friends and acquaintances and most importantly, raise awareness against censorship and our RIGHT TO EXPRESS.
