Christopher Bryant is an innocent man who has now been wrongfully sentenced to 23 years in prison. In 2022, Christopher, a hardworking Florida man with no criminal history, fired a single warning shot when he believed that our lives were in immediate danger. He acted in self-defense, he was protecting his family, and no one was harmed. Police did not arrest him that night. The incident was treated as what it was — a defensive response to fear.

Nearly two years later, after changes to Florida’s gun sentencing laws, he was suddenly arrested and charged.

Despite maintaining his innocence and having a strong claim of self-defense, his Stand Your Ground motion was denied, the very law that exists to protect people in situations just like his. Instead of being recognized as someone who was trying to stay alive, he has been punished as though he was the threat. A moment of survival has now been twisted into a narrative that has cost him his freedom.

Everyone who knows Christopher describes him the same way: calm, respectful, humble, and deeply family-oriented. He has always lived a life rooted in faith and integrity. He has never been in trouble a day in his life. To condemn someone like him to decades in prison is not justice — it is devastation.

Florida’s mandatory minimum sentencing laws leave no room for context, self-defense, or mercy. They strip away the truth and ignore who a person is. In Christopher’s case: he defended himself and his family, no one was physically injured, he has zero criminal history, and there is no evidence proving malicious intent. Yet he is being punished as though he is a violent criminal.    

This petition is not an attack on the legal system — it is a plea for fairness and justice. We are asking those with the power to do so to restore what was taken: a future, a family, a life worth living.

Christopher’s fight is not over. We are appealing this conviction and standing firm in the truth — that he acted to protect, not to harm. Everyone deserves to be judged by more than one moment of fear. Christopher deserves the chance to come home and rebuild his life with the faith and strength he has shown throughout this nightmare.
