As a person with disability, I rely on public transport to get out and about independently and to remain active in society. However while cities like Auckland, Wellington, Melbourne, and countries like UK & France have all implemented a discounted or free bus card for disabled bus users, Waikato has yet to take on a similar scheme. Though we are able to apply for the Total Mobility Scheme which is a transport subsidy of up to $30 per taxi trip, I am mobile enough not to require a door-to-door taxi service.
Hence I am advocating for a bus card that permits users with a disability free travel on local routes. This would not only promote the utilization of public bus services, support those really in need, but also reduce the overall energy cost for the society.
Please support me in encouraging the use of public transportation for people with disabilities, and help us to travel more independently in society.
