Free Annamaria Gana

Free Annamaria Gana
The Issue
In May of 2011, Annamaria Gana (or Aimee) was a loving wife and mother of two, battling aggressive breast cancer. She underwent chemotherapy and was prescribed a heavy regimen of medications, including drugs well-known to have side effects of depression, fatigue, agitation, psychosis, and confusion. Facing a grim prognosis, consumed with despair and suicidal ideation, and affected by the many prescribed medications she was taking, Annamaria experienced a psychotic break which led to her conviction.
Annamaria was sentenced to 40-years-to-life. At the time of her sentencing, even the District Attorney appealed to the judge, recommending instead a 2nd degree murder sentencing. She will not be eligible for parole until 2031. Her behavior has been exemplary during her incarceration. Annamaria is a wonderful person who is thoughtful, compassionate and selfless, always willing to give her time in the service of others. Circumstances that led to her lengthy sentencing have been repealed under California law - such as the mandatory 25-year-to-life gun enhancement she received.
During her time at the California Institution for Women in Corona, Annamaria has sought to understand this tragedy. She spends her time taking courses, coordinating events to help fellow inmates, and trying to make amends for the incident that has left her family anguished. She is deeply remorseful and seeks release so she can care for her aging mother and her two sons.
She has shown incredible accountability and consideration for those affected, above herself or any self-interests. During a decade of incarceration, Annamaria has utilized each opportunity available to further educate herself, as well as, donate her time to others.
We hope that you will have compassion for the effects of mental illness on Annamaria's decision-making skills and release her to her loving and supportive family and community. Thank you.
