Free all killer whales in captivity across the globe by 2020
The Issue
Orcas (also known as killer whales) are one of the most widely roaming animals on the planet. They can be found in every ocean and in almost all seas on Earth. There is no pool on the face of this planet large enough to house an orca and the only suitable home for them is the ocean. There are currently 56 orcas in captivity in different facilities around the world. This small number makes freeing these isolated animals so achievable.
The abhorrent quality of life for these captive whales was brought to the world’s attention in 2010 in the documentary Blackfish. We saw the culmination of a life of physical and mental torture – resulting in human death and debilitated whales. Tilikum (the whale at the centre of the documentary) will now spend the rest of his days isolated and floating stationary in a pool in SeaWorld Orlando. The manner in which he floats is behaviour never before observed in these creatures. It is indicative of a life of grievance and suffering.
Orcas are more emotionally intelligent than humans. The lobe in their brain responsible for emotional capacity is enlarged. We also know that orcas are deeply social creatures, perhaps even more so than humans. This means that separation from their pods is traumatising for the whales. Marine biologists have in fact recorded long distance cries from orcas in captivity as they attempt to communicate with their families.
Using this petition, we raise awareness for the orcas and change the world’s behaviour towards these whales forever.
- We demand that all current revenues generated by the whales are used solely for their rehabilitation; with a view to releasing them back into the wild when they are ready.
- We demand that all orca entertainment venues and operations are shut down forever.
- We demand that orcas are never again kept in captivity or used for entertainment in any location across the globe.
- We demand that these measures are in effect by 2020.
The following organisations have the power to implement these measures. They currently keep orcas in captivity and have the power to change this NOW:
· Mundo Marino (Argentina)
· Marineland Ontario (US)
· Marineland Antibes (France)
· Kamogawa SeaWorld (Japan)
· Port of Nagoya Aquarium (Japan)
· Loro Parque (Spain)
· Miami Seaquarium (US)
· SeaWorld California (US)
· SeaWorld Florida (US)
· SeaWorld Texas (US)
· Moscow (Russia)
· Nakhodka (Russia)
· Chimelong (China)
Please sign this petition and change the world’s attitude towards orcas forever. Once we have reached our intended number of signatures we shall approach each organisation and relevant governments directly to create a wave of change across the world.
