Free Adam Fitzhenry and All Detained Humanitarian Volunteers
The Issue
On Monday, May 18, 2026, the Global Sumud Flotilla—a civilian convoy of over 50 vessels carrying humanitarian aid and peaceful volunteers from over 45 countries—was intercepted by Israeli naval forces in international waters near Cyprus.
Among those currently detained is Wexford native Adam Fitzhenry from Bree, who was volunteering aboard the vessel Amazon, alongside at least 14 other Irish citizens and hundreds of international human rights defenders. Communication with Adam and his crew has been completely cut off, leaving families anxiously awaiting news of their safety and whereabouts.
These volunteers were participating in a peaceful, non-violent humanitarian mission aimed at delivering vital emergency supplies to the people of Gaza and challenging the ongoing maritime blockade. Intercepting a civilian aid convoy in international waters is a severe violation of international law and a direct assault on humanitarian efforts.
As families and communities, we are deeply concerned for the physical safety and well-being of Adam and all his comrades currently held by Israeli forces. We cannot stand by while peaceful volunteers are detained for attempting to deliver life-saving aid
We are calling on Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin and the Irish Government to take immediate, decisive action to:
Secure Safety: Use all available diplomatic channels to immediately verify the location, physical safety, and well-being of Adam Fitzhenry and all detained Irish and international activists.
Demand Immediate Release: Insist on the immediate, unconditional release of all volunteers and the safe return of their vessels and humanitarian cargo.
Ensure Swift Repatriation: Coordinate closely with international consular networks to ensure all detained individuals are safely and quickly returned to their home countries without harm or facing unlawful legal proceedings.
Time is of the essence. We urge the public to sign this petition to show the Irish Government and international authorities that the eyes of the world are watching, and we demand that Adam and his comrades be brought home safely
