The Issue

In our community, an alarming injustice has recently unfolded. A woman, by the name of Exavieria Maxie, was sentenced to a staggering 20 years in prison for a relatively minor gun charge. This isn't just an isolated incident; it reflects a significant flaw in our justice system that many face.

Ms. Maxie  is not a violent criminal, nor is she a threat to society. She has been a responsible, contributing member of her community. Yet due to an inflexible legal system, she must face decades away from her family and loved ones. This severe sentence highlights the inconsistencies and deep-seated biases present in our judicial processes, where similar cases often result in vastly different outcomes depending on the jurisdiction or the personal discretion of a judge or district attorney.

Statistics indicate that sentencing disparities exist and are influenced by subjective interpretations of the law. According to a study by The Sentencing Project, African American women are twice as likely to be imprisoned for drug-related offenses compared to their white counterparts. Maxie’s case echoes this sentiment, reminding us that prejudice and inequality continue to permeate our legal system.

Moreover, research from the American Civil Liberties Union notes that mandatory minimum sentences often deny judges the flexibility needed to tailor sentences to fit individual circumstances, resulting in disproportionately harsh penalties.

Maxie's situation is untenable. She deserves a second chance, and we, as a society, owe it to her to pursue justice and fairness for all. We must call for a re-evaluation of her case and demand that her sentence be commuted. By doing so, we will not only rectify one wrong but also take a stand against a systemic issue that affects countless others like her.

Please join me in demanding justice for Exavieria . Sign this petition to urge our judicial system to do better, to be fairer, and to ensure that no one else suffers such an unjust fate. Together, we can make a difference and bring Exavieria Maxie back to her family.
