Stephen Colbert is a well-known Republican Conservative who is well known for asking questions, and asking interviewees to explain themselves. He has interviewed many members of Congress, and has demonstrated a very strong understanding of facts and politics.

As someone who will admit when he does not understand something, and ask people to explain what they mean, he is uniquely qualified to ask the people at a debate to explain what they mean, which is something desperately needed in this crowded republican field.
