Stop the Rocky Horror Picture Show television reboot
The Issue
For four decades, Jim Sharman's 1975 film adaption of Richard O'Brien's stage production has been chilling, thrilling and fulfilling literal generations of theater-goers. The Rocky Horror Picture Show has gained a monumental cult following and holds the distinction of being the longest-running theatrical release in film history. As evidence of its lasting social impact and cultural significance, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2005. There is much emotion bound up in the history of Rocky, and despite emotion being a powerful and irrational master it reflects the enduring influence of the film.
Now, Fox Broadcasting Company thinks it can do the Time Warp again by bankrolling a television reboot of the film complete with, no doubt, a deep and sensitive interpretation from the brilliant minds that gave the world "High School Musical". The result will certainly not receive the Charles Atlas seal of approval from longtime Rocky aficionados.
Let's face it: no one in America is shivering with an-tici.....pation of this production. Nor was anyone in 2002, when Fox announced ultimately failed plans for a new RHPS adaptation timed for the film's 30th anniversary year.
Given the economics of media in our times the idea of a reboot has a certain naïve charm, but no muscle. As fans of RHPS, we certainly do not want to be taken on Fox's strange journey. While Fox is certainly welcome to dream it, we would rather that the company not be it.
