Fortify our Food for Mental Health- A Companion Vision for Executive Order 14321

Petition: Fortify Our Food for Mental Health – A National Brain-Health Fortification Initiative

Mental health is in crisis—and part of the solution is already on our plates.

My name is Kelly Gene, also known as The First Lady of Poetry. I’m a mother, an advocate, and a storyteller—but more importantly, I’m someone who has walked through the failures of our mental health system.

I have a son with schizophrenia. I watched him partially stabilize when he followed a brain-healing diet rich in omega‑3s and anti-inflammatory foods. I also watched him decline when he couldn’t sustain it—because access, cost, and compliance shouldn’t decide who gets well.

I realized something simple yet profound:
If mental illness can be worsened by what we lack nutritionally, then mental health can be strengthened by what we provide.

The Science is Clear

Neuroinflammation drives mental illness – Research shows that conditions like schizophrenia, depression, and even long COVID brain fog are linked to chronic inflammation in the brain.

Algal Omega‑3s (DHA & EPA) reduce psychosis risk, improve cognition, and lower inflammation. See the study here: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33586517/?utm_source=chatgpt.com

Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, protects brain cells and improves mood and memory. See the study here: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8868558/?utm_source=chatgpt.com

We’ve done this before – Iodine in salt eliminated goiter. Vitamin D in milk prevented rickets. Folic acid in bread reduced birth defects. Fortifying food saves lives.

So why aren’t we doing this for mental health?

What We’re Asking For

We call on U.S. public health agencies and policymakers to launch a National Brain-Health Fortification Initiative that will:

1. Fortify staple foods (like bread, grains, or dairy alternatives) with safe levels of algal omega‑3s and curcumin.

2. Make brain-health nutrition accessible to everyone, especially vulnerable populations.

3. Fund further research and public education on how nutrition supports mental wellness.

Why This Matters

Right now, millions of Americans are suffering—not because they are broken, but because our system doesn’t give them the tools to heal. Families are losing loved ones to illnesses that could be supported with simple, preventative measures.

Mental health treatment is not just therapy and medication—it’s also nutrition, community, and care. This is a simple, scalable, cost-effective step toward a healthier society.
