Fort Worth ISD Board of Education needs to consider teaching teen dating violence (TDV) awareness in the school curriculum to promote healthy relationships, prevent and respond to violence, and prevent lifetime consequences.

According to Teen Dating Violence Statistics (2019), in a single year, nearly 1.5 million high school students experience physical abuse in the nation from a dating partner, 1 in 3 females and 1 in 6 male are victims of physical abuse, and 96 percent experienced emotional abuse from a dating partner. Thirty-three percent of high school report abuse and 81 percent of parents do not agree that dating violence is an issue. Teen Dating Violence involves physical, psychological aggression, sexual abuse, and stalking a teenager uses to gain power and control over another in a dating relationship and, because of this behavior in their adolescence, TDV can provoke violent behavior in their adulthood. Its negative impact on victims and their schools include poor academic performance, decrease in school attendance, psychological problems, suicide attempts, antisocial and unhealthy behavior, mental health issues, and other health outcomes.

Parents, teachers, stakeholders, advocates, and the communities all need to help and support to fight the dating violence epidemic that is growing exponentially among our children. Acting early to give warning signs to our children, teach them safe and healthy relationship skills, protect them by increase safety and reduce harms, and encourage them to take back their voices, can prevent TDV before it occurs and end its increase among our children to avoid problems in the future relationship. As the risk factors threatening the health and safety of our children, we need to strengthen their emotional and social skills and implement behavioral supports by creating a curriculum to teach the awareness of teen dating violence, warning signs, sexual assaults, stalking, reporting cases, and resources in the school system.

If you support the prevention and intervention of teen dating violence, let your voice be heard—  Please sign this petition and pass it along!
