Formal Explanation Supporting a Proposed County Boundary Adjustment

Northwest Haywood County to Lauderdale County

 

Residents of the northwest portion of Haywood County respectfully request consideration of a county boundary adjustment that would place our community within Lauderdale County. This request is based on longstanding concerns related to infrastructure, emergency response, geographic accessibility, taxation, and the alignment of essential services that directly affect public safety and quality of life.

 

1. Infrastructure and Road Maintenance

Road conditions within our community have significantly deteriorated and have not received consistent or timely maintenance. Forked Deer State Route 180, a primary roadway serving our area, has been in severe need of repair for an extended period. Residents formally requested maintenance due to unsafe conditions. In response, only limited patchwork repairs were performed. These repairs failed to address the underlying deterioration and, in some locations, resulted in uneven surfaces that further increased safety hazards for drivers.

 

These infrastructure concerns were further highlighted during a recent snow event, when our roadway was not plowed until eleven days after the storm. This prolonged delay created ongoing safety risks and restricted residents’ ability to travel for work, medical care, and emergency situations. Nearby Lauderdale County communities experienced more timely road maintenance under similar conditions.

 

2. Emergency Services Access and Response Times

Emergency services serving our area are geographically closer and more accessible through Lauderdale County. Fire, emergency medical, and law enforcement resources in Lauderdale County are located significantly nearer to our community than comparable services based in Haywood County. Faster response times are critical for medical emergencies, fires, and public safety incidents, and proximity plays a vital role in outcomes. Aligning our community with Lauderdale County would place emergency services within closer reach, improving response efficiency and overall public safety.

 

3. Geographic Proximity and Practical Access to County Services

Our community is substantially closer to Lauderdale County population centers than to Haywood County’s seat. The cities of Halls and Gates in Lauderdale County are approximately ten minutes from our area, while Brownsville, the county seat of Haywood County, is more than thirty minutes away. This distance makes routine access to Haywood County offices and services more burdensome, while Lauderdale County represents the natural hub for commerce, services, and daily travel.

 

4. Utilities and Service Alignment

Nearly all essential utilities serving our community are already provided through Lauderdale County systems, including electricity, water, natural gas, trash collection, and related services. This existing alignment reflects the functional integration of our community with Lauderdale County and demonstrates that current administrative boundaries do not reflect service realities.

 

5. Taxation and Financial Equity

Property taxes assessed in Haywood County are higher than those levied in Lauderdale County, resulting in a greater financial burden on residents without a proportional level of services. Additionally, vehicle registration fees in Lauderdale County are less than half the cost of those in Haywood County. A boundary adjustment would promote a fairer balance between taxes paid and services received.

 

6. Community Cohesion and Long-Term Efficiency

Reassigning our community to Lauderdale County would align governance with existing service delivery, geographic realities, and economic relationships. This adjustment would improve efficiency, reduce service gaps, enhance public safety, and establish clearer accountability for infrastructure and emergency services.

 

Conclusion

This request is not intended as criticism of Haywood County but as a practical and forward-looking assessment of how our community is currently served and how it can be better supported in the future. A county boundary adjustment would align our community with the county that already provides the majority of our services, offers closer emergency response, and represents the most accessible center for daily needs.

 

We respectfully request that this proposal be given thoughtful consideration in the interest of public safety, fiscal fairness, and effective local governance.
