Allow Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) in Cook County Parks
Stand up paddle boards (SUPs) are currently prohibited in all Cook County parks, even in places where kayaks and other non-motorized boats are allowed. This makes no sense! Paddle boarding is a fun activity and a great way to get out into nature. Those who are familiar with it will agree that it poses no more of a safety issue than other watercraft.
Currently if I want to use my inflatable SUP, I have to go to Lake Michigan where the water conditions are often dangerous, or I have to drive all the way to Indiana or Lake County. Given the large number of lakes around Chicagoland, there should be at least a few where people can bring their own boards and enjoy this growing sport.
I request permitting for SUPs specifically on Saganashkee Slough in the Palos Forest Preserves, since this is already an accessible location that is popular for kayaks and canoes. This activity should have no greater restrictions than are currently in place for the other ways that people like to get out on the water.
