Since August 2017, over 1 million Rohingya people have fled from their homes in Myanmar in to neighbouring countries. Their villages have been raided and burnt down and loved ones have been killed, raped or have disappeared without explanation.  Many have led their families through rivers and mud for days and not all of them have survived the journey. But no one puts their children in a boat unless the water is safer than the land.

The Rohingya have been persecuted for decades and right now we’re witnessing an intentional destruction of an entire region and people. To use another word, we’re witnessing a genocide.

The UK is one of Myanmar's larger trading partners and by imposing harsh financial sanctions, this will send a clear message that the Rohingya genocide is intolerable and will not be allowed to continue without consequences.
