The Issue

As a student in the York County School Division, I have always been dedicated to my academic success and efficient management of school tasks. Like many of my peers, I have invested in a personal device specifically for school work that is perfectly suited to my needs. It not only lets me manage my assignments effectively but also helps me organize my schedule, access resources, and collaborate with classmates seamlessly.

However, the newly introduced policy on the usage of personal devices threatens to disrupt this arrangement by banning them from being used at school. This policy implies that students must rely solely on school-provided technology, which may not be sufficient or as efficient for individual student needs. This new rule overlooks the fact that personal devices are often more familiar and comfortable for students to use, enhancing productivity and learning outcomes.

The policy, though introduced with good intentions to standardize the technology environment, fails to consider the unique needs and learning styles of individual students. It's crucial to recognize that each student's learning journey is different, and having the flexibility to use a personal device can significantly support those students who thrive when given the right tools.

Moreover, the financial burden of acquiring standard devices mandated by the school could be challenging for families, especially when personal devices already in possession can serve the same purpose, if not better.

There is ample evidence showing that personalized learning through student's own devices can lead to improved engagement and success. Considering these aspect, it might be beneficial to reassess the policy and introduce guidelines that allow students to use their personal devices in conjunction with school devices. This would embrace the diversity in students' learning tools and potentially enhance overall educational outcomes.

We need to stand together and urge the York County School Division to forego the new policy and instead support a more flexible, student-centric approach to technology use in schools.

Join me in signing this petition to make a change that respects and acknowledges the diverse needs of students. Together, we can ensure that all students have access to the tools that best support their learning.
